I realize this doesn’t exactly pertain to what I would normally post on my website, but I had to post this experience my sister’s friend had with her daughter yesterday. About a half hour before her 14 year old daughter returned home her mother noticed she kept getting IM’s on her computer from someone called Mr. Wonderful. He was asking her random questions about her school and homework. When her daughter got home she immediatley asked her who Mr. Wonderful was and her daughter said “Oh, he’s our substitute bus driver at school.” “Did you give him your IM address?”, her mother asked. “Yes, he heard my friend and I talking about IM-ing each other and said I have an account to and I’d like to chat with you.”, her daughter replied.
Needless to say, her mother was beside herself as they don’t allow her to have a Facebook account and she has been told numerous times not to give information out to strangers. Her daughter is very well behaved and far from being mischievous. After seeing her mother’s reaction she said, “I know mom, but he’s my bus driver and I thought it was cool that he wanted to talk to me.” He’s 44 years old, has a daughter who is a senior at the same school, and had IM’d her a few times slowly building trust and befriending her. Her mother told her, “Your father is the same age and how would you feel if he told your best friend that he’d like to get her IM address and talk to her everyday too?” Her daughter thought that seemed very strange and creepy and instantly was terrified when she realized what was really going on.
Her mother immediately called the police, but the bus driver had no record and they couldn’t do anything! The police said that was the exact MO of a pedofile. Thank goodness she had the intelligence to report him immediatley and she caught him early on! Please know what your kids are doing and who they are talking to!
