Dress Code

I do not have any dress requirements other than dress in light, airy clothing that they can freely move in.  I really want the kids to feel free to express themselves.  Just please no bellies or booty’s exposed.  There are no street shoes allowed in the studio and I would recommend you have a flat bottom sneaker or dance sneaker that doesn’t stick when they turn.  This is hip hop and Zumbatomic so you want to give your kids good support to bounce around on.  Please don’t send them to class in ballet shoes. There is a great selection of dance sneakers available now that I didn’t have when I was younger.  If you Google dance apparel or dance shoes you will find many websites to choose from.  I have posted a picture below so you can see the type of sole that is best for them.  You certainly don’t have to purchase new dance sneakers or dance shoes.  They can wear whatever sneakers are most comfortable for them as long as they are not wearing their street shoes.  Your children will not be allowed to attend class in their socks.  There is a wonderful window for the parents to watch their kids during class so please, I ask that only the students be in the room so there are no distractions.

Our First Trip To Valdez

Valdez, AK

Valdez, AK

We recently purchased a small deep v ocean boat and took the family to Valdez, AK. WOW! I have been to Valdez before but not like this. We rolled into Valdez late Thursday night and stayed in a hotel as we were taking the boat out to Jack Bay the next morning to stay in the forestry cabin at the end of the bay. Keep in mind when you stay in a forestry cabin in Alaska, you’re in the deep wilderness on your own. I had never done that before let alone taken my kids to one. Needless to say, we were overly prepared and didn’t forget a thing. The problem with that is it took us about 2 hours to get to the cabin as you have to go by boat and we had WAY to much stuff in our boat! It was quite hilarious putting through the bay at 9 miles an hour not even getting the boat up on step.

Our Deep V ocean boat

Our Deep V ocean boat

I was giddy even so as I love boats and grew up on them. The sun was shining and the scenery was spectacular! Everything was enormous! The ocean, the mountains, the waterfalls, and the gigantic sea lion we kept running into. You lose all concept of time and space. I so love living in Alaska and taking deep breaths of the fresh, crisp air and freaking out everytime I see any animals. It doesn’t matter if I just saw a bald eagle or seal 5 minutes ago and took pictures. I’m going to sqeal with excitement everytime and take pictures. I love observing nature and getting as close as we can.

Jack Bay Cabin (Our home away from home)

Jack Bay Cabin (Our home away from home)

We arrived at the cabin and it was the cutest most fabulous little cabin away from everyone and everything but nature. My husband grew up visiting this cabin as a child and hadn’t been there in 20 years. He was so happy to be back and impressed with all of the renovations that had been done to the cabin over time. We pulled in at high tide which was perfect for unloading all that weight out of our boat as the water is only about 5 feet from the cabin at high tide. The kids played around on the beach while I settled in and Ryan tended to the boat and raft.

I coudn’t help but recount all the times he told me about black bears visiting them at that very cabin. He’d wake up in the morning and open the front door to see a black bear sitting there like, “Hey, what’s going on man?” They never had any issues with the bears and they meant no harm but I’ve seen way to many movies and heard way to many horror stories. I couldn’t stop thinking about the bears.

Right before we left, a friend of a friend on facebook was commenting on the group of teenage boys that had been attacked by a bear 3 days before we left on our trip. She stated that if the bear was brown, lie down, if it’s black, fight back. Well, I had never heard anyone say fight back when encountering a bear and told her so and she proceeded to tell me that black bears will eat you. I about died! While I do not believe that black bears have a tendency to be man eaters, her comment bothered me immensely as black bears were the only bears my husband ever saw in Valdez. I just kept thinking, “Am I really going to have to fight a bear?” My husband thought it was funny and kept reminding me that when you do finally encounter one out here you will understand why your fears are quite silly.

The Outhouse (Can you see the fuzzy moss covered stumps?)

The Outhouse (Can you see the fuzzy moss covered stumps?)

He was very patient and catered to my fears. He walked me to the outhouse at night and everytime we’d walk back to the cabin I would sprint beside him to walk in front fearing what may be coming. I gave him a good laugh many times and dang it, I just need to see one! Fortunately they prefer fish and there is a plethora of fish this time of year. Well, I felt like a Ptarmigan or Grouse out there in the wilderness. Stupid and unaware of what might be staring at me through the immensely thick brush in this beautiful temperate rain forest. The woods were so thick and you wouldn’t believe how much a stump covered in moss looks like a fuzzy bear! At least a Ptarmigan or Grouse have the camouflage thing going for them. I’m wearing bright clothing in an unfamiliar envioronment. I would never see one coming nor would I hear it because all of the waterfalls drown out all other sounds. We did not see any bears or signs of them and made sure we kept the cabin tidy and removed our trash every chance we got.

The cutest little harbor seal ever!

The cutest little harbor seal ever!

The master of his domain. You don't mess with this sea lion.

The master of his domain. You don't mess with this sea lion.

We did however spend the 5 days in the bay with 4 harbor seals. They were absolutely adorable! They have huge dark eyes that remind me of Puss in Boots from Shrek. They were very curious about what we were doing and would check us out when we were riding around on our 7’6″ raft. We also saw many sea otters and I hear they are quite the pests. They tend to wipe out their prey. Constantly eating, but they sure are cute. The large male sea lion was fising for salmon one day and that was exciting! He was quite the fisherman and enjoying the heck out of those slamon. He obviously thinks the bay is his territory as he perched himself up on a rock a few days later scratching himself and basking in the sun. He wasn’t thrilled that we were in his area and swam by our boat, looked my husband dead in the eye, and snorted quite loudly at us. We could see females popping up around his basking rock as if to say, “Can we come out yet?” They did a great job at keeping themselves hidden.

Then there were the bald eagles. Have you ever seen a bald eagle fly over your head quite closely while scanning the ocean for fish or the shore for scraps? They are amazing and very intimidating when you see their eyes and that gaze scanning for their next meal. I sure am glad i’m not on their list of snacks! I so enjoy listening to them chatter amongst each other. It’s just like listening to two friendly parrots talking to one another. There were two in our bay raising a rucus with the ravens and other birds around the area. Ooooh can they upset a nest just being nearby. They have no fear and why should they? They sit there almost as if they are deciding if they want to ruin the ravens day or move on because of all the harrassment they are getting. I could’t take enough pictures of those birds.

The fishing masters!

We went out for our first fishing adventure on day two and my husband was trying to remember all the sweet spots to fish in the area. We weren’t having much luck with the big fish as we were right in between two salmon runs. But if you put a small pixie on a piece of string and just bob it up and down you will yank out codfish all day long. The kids were absolutely thrilled! My 3 year old daughter was using her tiny Barbie fishing pole and was the fishing master! She was reeling in codfish right and left. My son had a bit bigger pole and couldn’t feel them biting as well as she could on her small pole, but he still caught a bunch as well. We have a live fish well in the front of the boat that constantly feeds fresh water from the ocean. The kids thought that was the best thing ever! Catching the codfish and putting them in the fishing well to inspect, pet, and harrass. We eventually moved on to a more rocky area to fish so we could try for some rock fish and they were just as easy to catch as the codfish. They are just a bit more dangerous to handle. They’ve got some prickly dorsal fins. We have many Alaskan mammal and fish books so we always inspect our catch and discuss their habitat, eating habits, and anatomy. The kids love that.

The clam loot!

My husband and son went clamming one evening and dug up 31 clams. That was quite exciting for my son. My husband had purchased a clam gun which he had never used before and loved it. Aside from clam digging, my son would constantly scour the beach during low tide and find eels, crabs, bugs, and all sorts of things I had never seen before. He’d round them up in his bucket and show off his find to everyone. The eels were so small and all sorts of colors.

The cabin was surrounded with salmon berry bushes and blueberry bushes. So fun to walk out the door, pick a berry and eat it. They were yummy. Once the rain started it didn’t stop for 3 days and you wouldn’t believe how the waterfalls grew and the creeks started raging! Such a beautiful place and we were very sad to leave. Even though it rains quite often in Valdez, if you have the proper gear, the rain makes no difference. It’s still a beautiful place teaming with wildlife.

The locals were very friendly and we appreciated their help whenever it was needed. The fellow boaters were very nice and there’s always someone nearby or the coast guard if you ever have an emergency. We did not want to leave and can’t wait to go back! I am looking forward to our next visit and what new adventures we may have.

Breakout Dance Studio Coming Soon To Fairbanks, Alaska

I am so proud and happy to say that I will be opening my dance studio within the next year at home! We will be building my dance studio on the second floor of my husbands shop. It’s going to be a 30×50 studio and will feature hip hop dance and a variety of other styles of dance that Fairbanks is craving! Until the studio is finished I will be teaching classes at the Artisan’s Courtyard on College Road across from Beaver Sports.

I am currently teaching youth hip hop classes at the Artisan’s Courtyard for 9-12yr olds and 5-8yr olds. Classes will begin September 5th and run through December 14th for the fall semester and run January 9th through May 23rd for the spring semester. Enrollment for the fall semester ends September 20th. If you would like to enroll your child, you can email me at breakout@secondskin.biz or call 460-2744. You can also follow Breakout Studio’s Fanpage at www.facebook.com/connectwithjamie

Class schedules: Artisan’s Courtyard 1755 Westwood Way, Fairbanks, Ak 99709

Tuesday – Youth Hip Hop (9-12yrs)- 5:00-6:00 Studio 1

Wednesday – Youth Hip Hop (5-8yrs)- 5:30-6:30 Studio 2

I do not have any dress requirements and really want the kids to feel free to express themselves. Just please no bellies or booty’s exposed. There are no street shoes allowed in the studio and I would recommend you have a flat bottom sneaker or dance sneaker that doesn’t stick when they turn. This is hip hop so you want to give your kids good support to bounce around on. Please don’t send them to class in ballet shoes or socks. Your children will not be allowed to participate in class if they are in socks. There is a great selection of dance sneakers available now that I didn’t have when I was younger. If you Google dance apparel or dance shoes you will find many websites to choose from. But by no means do you have to purchase dance sneakers or dance shoes. They can wear any sneakers they feel most comfortable in as long as they aren’t their street shoes. There is a wonderful window for the parents to watch their kids during class so please I ask that only the students be in the room so there are no distractions.

I have been dancing since I was 5 years old and took a break in my 20′s for many years while starting my family. I started dancing again a few years ago and missed it greatly. I love all styles of dance and have always had a strong desire to express myself through dance and feel that most studios don’t allow individual expression. I have always gravitated towards hip hop, funk, and any kind of high energy dance. I wanted to offer Fairbanks some youth dance classes that they could really exert some energy in while having fun at the same time. I love teaching kids and have taught jazz, tap, and hip hop and see the need for them to really exert themselves and be kids. I am very excited to start teaching youth hip hop on my own as I am a big kid myself and tend to think outside the box. Thank you for inquiring about my studio and I hope to see you soon!

Please contact me if you have any questions and I look forward to seeing your kids in class in September.

Share your stories about Mike Straatsma

Thank you all for your concern and your help.  My brother in law Mike has cancer in his lungs and his liver right now and it is spreading very rapidly.  The doctors say he has a few months left and are amazed that he is able to do so much right now.

We have been planning a trip to Florida in January and when we got the news about Mike we were in shock and Ryan wanted to see him ASAP.  After talking to Mike and asking him what he’d like to do, he said he was planning on going to Florida anyway and always wanted to go.  He hasn’t had a vacation since he left Alaska and wants to go diving in FL and just have a nice time.

The family is doing all we can to help him get to FL and we are going to make it happen.  I thought to myself there are so many friends and family out there that I know would want to help Mike enjoy his first vacation in over 20 years, just ask for help and see what happens.

If you are able to donate any money towards his trip to FL and his return to Alaska, it would be greatly appreciated.   If you have a paypal account please send your donations to orders@secondskin.biz.  We will be in the Daytona area and if you don’t have a paypal account and want to send him a gift card or anything, here is the address you can reach us at in FL.  We will be there Jan 17th – Feb 3rd.

Ponce Inlet, FL 32127

Mike’s mailing address in Minnesota is

Pine River, MN 56474

Money would be great to help ease his financial stress right now, but your memories of him and the experiences you’ve had are very important and I would love to be able to put all of your stories together for him to read in FL.

You can send your memories of your experiences with Mike and the Straatsma family at jamie@secondskin.biz or you can leave a comment on this post, as his sister did, and share your story with everyone.

I thank you all for your help, kind words, thoughts, and prayers.  Mike is staying strong and we are hoping for the best.  I will be keeping you all posted on how he is doing and our adventures in FL and appreciate you taking the time to read this.

Jamie

This picture is classic Mike and was taken a few years ago when he visited Alaska.

Ryan and Mike riding on their snowmachine together.  Many good memories, although most of them were scarry at the time, :) never the less, these are the times Ryan remembers the most.  One of the reasons why he still holds the top gun speed record for a snowboarder in the Arctic Man.  His brother Mike scared all of the fear out of him!

What are your emails really saying?

In the technological world we live in today with all of our gadgets and methods of communications, it’s easy for us to lose all etiquette when communicating online.  We are in such a hurry and constantly texting, emailing, and updating our statuses that we forget to use our manners.

I thought I was a bit old school by filling in my subject line, using a an opener and a closing, and spelling out all of the words in my message.  I have never been a fan of the “lol” world of texting.  My kids toys even have these abbreviations programmed in them!  Can’t they just laugh out loud?

I urge you to read this article and assess the way you are communicating online.  What are your messages really telling your recipients?  http://www.netmanners.com/email-etiquette/courtesy-2/

Ignorance is not bliss online.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people really don’t think about the messages they are sending in their messages! Are you following me? I know we all could use these tips to make us better online communicators. This information can open your eyes to the impressions you are giving others through your online habits and methods and not your words.

How much time do we waste checking our emails and cleaning out all the garbage our friends and family send us? Remember the days when spamming was coming only from businesses trying to sell you something? In todays internet world we are now getting spam messages from our closest friends and family!

Is an email with pictures of cuddly kittens along with sweet sayings really worth my time reading? Not to metion, how meaningful is it if you’ve forwarded it on to 30 other people? If you really like someone and want them to know, send them a personal message you created.

There are so many great ways to really communicate, share your lives, and express yourself on the internet now. Try to stick with one on one direct communication. With all of the e-cards, social media games, and copied emails available to us, it makes it easy to fall into the trap of mass meaningless communicating that wastes everyones time.

This article has many good points that I hope you will share with everyone. Let’s help spread the awareness of etiquette on the internet.

Interested in blogging? Tips to help you get started with your own professional blog.

First and foremost, start with asking yourself, “Why do I want to start a blog and what topic do I want my blog to be centered around?”  What are your interests and passions?  Stick with something you know well or feel strongly about.  No one is going to be interested in your blog if you are discussing topics you don’t know well or you are copying someone else’s information.  Always keep it real and be true to whom you are and people will be attracted to that.

Let’s discuss your options for a blog.  You can create your own custom blog through your own website as I did.  I use Powerhost for my webhosting and WordPress for my blog.  I would recommend setting up your blog through wordpress.org because it is self hosted and you will own it.  If you are serious about blogging, I would also recommend you hire a professional to design your blog.  It makes a huge difference on the appearance and will save you time when setting up.  Here is a link to the awesome team of designers that put my site together in a short period of time at a very affordable price.  http://blogdesignservice.jamiestraatsma.com

Once you’re up and running, try to make a post one to three times a week.  If you add value to your readers through your posts they will return again.  Try not to make your posts too lengthy and keep your paragraphs short.  You don’t want to overwhelm your readers.

You most definitely want to have links to all of your social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and You Tube.  If you don’t know how to do that, I will have future posts explaining how to utilize these features.  Now, get out there and start blogging!  You’ll only get better if you practice!

Leave a comment and let me know how blogging is working out for you or if I can help you in any way.  Thank you for visiting my website and I will be posting more blogging tips soon!
